Olleros to Chavín de Huantar

Cross the Andes on the same ancient footpath people walked to the prehistoric capital of Chavín de Huantar over 1000 years ago. The Chavín culture is considered to be the mother of all the Peruvian culture and even out dates the Incas. Catch glimpses of the past as you run this ancient trail scattered with relics and ruins of this fascinating civilization.

Despite it’s incredible beauty, the Olleros to Chavín route is one of the lesser known trekking routes through the Cordillera Blanca. With more gradual inclines, smoother pathways, and unique topography to the Cordillera Blanca, the Chavín Trail is one of the best trail runs in Huascarán National Park. Typically done as a three day “llama trek”, this 45km course crosses the Andes from west to east with one high mountain pass at Punta Yanashallash (4,700). One of the highlights of this event is finishing at the excavated ruins of Chavín de Huantar, the epicenter of this influential ancient civilization.

Race Day

The 2019 Chavín Trail 45k will begin at 7:00am on June 1 in the town of Olleros. This is roughly a 30-45 minute drive from Huaraz- transportation to and from the event is included in the registration cost. The race course is a point to point that climbs to the top of Yanashallash Pass and descends down to the toen of Chavín de Huantar. There will be food and refreshments available for all racers at the finish with an awards ceremony to follow for top finishers. There will be shuttles back to Huaraz following the ceremony. Please see the itinerary below for a more detailed outline of the event.

* Please note for safety reasons there will be an 11 hour time limit to complete this race. There will also be one cutoff time of 6 hours to Aid Station 3 (Yanashallash Pass). In the event that you are unable to make this first cutoff time you will be asked turn around and return to Aid Station 2 where a vehicle will transport you back to Huaraz. There will be horses and vehicles sweeping the route and giving rides to those who are unable to complete the route in the 11 hour time limit.
